Herbal Medicine

Herbal treatments are probably the oldest form of medicine. They have been used in India for over 5000 years. First written herbal prescriptions for horses originate from China. Wales also has a rich history when it comes to herbs and the Physicians of Myddfai were well known for their herbal knowledge.

Iris’ interest in nature developed at a young age. She was one of the youngest active members of a local nature conservation group. Between the ages of 14 and 24 she earned her pocket money harvesting herbs, for example small flowered Willowherb, Limeflower, St John’s Wort and Hawthorn.

In Germany, licensed herbal remedies are widely used in human and veterinary medicine and Iris has used them in veterinary practice since 2004. To meet the specific needs of her patients she started in-depth training in veterinary herbal medicine with Integrate in 2012. She completed the certification process with the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies (CIVT) in 2020, which took her experience into account and certified 500 hours of continuing professional development (CPD).

Iris uses individually mixed herbs for a broad range of conditions. These include musculoskeletal, respiratory and skin problems, and even conditions like epilepsy.

Some herbs can easily be harvested by the owner and are effective as a tea. In other cases, the skilful formulation of a herbal prescription is important and high-quality extracts are very effective and easy to administer.

At A.P.Vet ltd. we are committed to sourcing our herbs organically and from local suppliers wherever possible, including from Herefordshire and Wales.

We offer herbal consults (referral only) at treatment rooms in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire.
