Why Choose A.P Vet Ltd
When being titre tested a lot of dogs miss out on their annual health check examination, which they would receive when getting their booster.
Iris will do an examination before taking bloods raising any concerns she feels you should take up with your first line vet.
When to Titre Test and Why:
Titre testing, instead of routinely giving out boosters, is recommended by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) as gold standard after a Parvo vaccination at 16 weeks. Mostly, dogs are given their primary DHP vaccine earlier at between 8 and 12 weeks of age. The 1st year booster is just to cover the very few dogs that are not protected after the primary vaccination.
If testing shows a positive titre at 20 weeks of age, then there is no need to test or vaccinate DHP for 3 years. Against popular belief, it is more important to test elderly dogs because immunity can be affected by age. Most dogs have lasting protection from vaccines previously given so do not require their boosters.
We cannot use Titre Testing to assess levels of protection against Leptospirosis and Kennel Cough.
How does titre testing work?
A tiny amount of blood is taken from either the leg or neck. Tests are usually run “in house”. The final result is either “protected” or “not protected”.
At the end of a titre clinic the blood samples are applied to the vaccicheck plate, processed with the immuno comb and read after calibrating the test. Certificates often can often replace vaccination cards for agility shows or boarding kennels, but make sure you check before.
